Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica is a symptom caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which is the longest and largest nerve in the human body. This nerve originates in the lower back and travels through the hips and down the back of each leg. When the nerve is pinched—often by a misaligned vertebra, a bulging disc, or a tight muscle in the pelvis—it can cause sharp, shooting pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the low back all the way to the foot.

The root of sciatica is typically a mechanical breakdown. When the lumbar spine or sacroiliac joints lose their proper alignment, the resulting inflammation and pressure create a "bottleneck" for the nerve. If the body is forced to move with these imbalances, the symptoms often worsen, leading to muscle weakness and significant mobility restrictions.

Sometimes a patient requires imaging for sciatica. Dr. Stupi is able to refer you for both x-rays and MRIs if medically necessary.
